ILLNESS POLICY
I hold a current Early Years first aid certificate and keep a fully equipped first aid kit (and also in my car). I am happy to administer medicines provided by the parent (medicines such as Calpol, Calprufen and Piriton I do keep on the premises) whether over a long or short period of time. I am required to obtain and keep on file signed written parental consent of all medicines administered. However due to the risk of infection to the other children in my care and also my own family, I will not look normally after sick children. For this reason it is generally not appropriate for me to be named as an emergency contact for the child’s school/pre-school, however I am happy to discuss any particular requirements with parents and in certain circumstances may be able to help.
If a child is prescribed antibiotics (and provided I have a signed written parental consent form allowing me to administer medication) they may return to the setting once they are better in themselves. However, this must not be less than 48 hours after they have seen their GP and begun taking their medication. Due to the risk of infestation to the other children in my care and also my own family, I will not look after children with headlice, impetigo or other similar infestations until they have been treated. If a child is found to have any of these conditions, I will contact the parent and expect the child to be collected immediately. Any accident or incident that occurs while the child is in my care must also be entered in the accident book, together with a clear explanation of how the incident occurred if applicable. The parent/carer must sign this entry to show that they have been informed.
